NIE, Empadronamiento and the Paperwork Order for Newcomers
Two pieces of paper unlock almost everything in Spain: the NIE (your foreigner ID number) and the empadronamiento (your local-council registration). Most newcomers stall because they try to do them in the wrong order. Here's the sequence that works.
What each one is
NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero): the unique ID Spain assigns to every foreigner who deals with the state — opening a bank account, signing a long lease, getting a phone contract, paying tax. Empadronamiento (padrón): your registration at the local town hall confirming you live at an address. Required for the public health card, school enrolment, the residence card and, often, a long lease.
The correct order
1. Land with a passport. 2. Book a furnished mid-term apartment (no NIE needed for a temporary lease). 3. Apply for the NIE — at the police station if you're already in Spain, or at the Spanish consulate before you fly. 4. Once you have the NIE and a rental contract, book your empadronamiento appointment online. 5. With NIE + padrón you can open a Spanish bank account, sign a phone contract and, eventually, a long residential lease.
What landlords and platforms ask for
A mid-term platform typically asks for: passport, proof of income or a sponsor, and a short reason for the stay. A long-lease landlord typically asks for: NIE, last three payslips or a work contract, and a bank guarantee or rental insurance. The mid-term route is dramatically faster precisely because it asks for less.
Common mistakes
Trying to get an NIE without an appointment — you'll wait months. Booking the empadronamiento before you have a signed rental contract — the town hall will turn you away. Assuming a tourist booking on Airbnb counts as a residential address — it doesn't.
FAQ
How long does the NIE take?
From the consulate before arrival: 2–6 weeks. From a Spanish police station with a booked appointment: same day. Without an appointment: months.
Can I register at a friend's address?
Yes, with their written permission and a copy of their lease or property deed. Many newcomers do this for the first few months.
Do I need empadronamiento for a mid-term rental?
Not to rent it — but you'll need it for almost everything else after the first month, so register as soon as you have a contract.
